Planning a cruise that stops or begins in Europe? You need to be aware of an important travel update regarding ETIAS for cruise passengers. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is currently expected to launch in late 2026, introducing a new pre-travel requirement for visitors from visa-exempt countries, including those from the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This is not a visa. ETIAS is an entry authorization that must be obtained before travel. If your cruise itinerary includes ports in France, Spain, Italy, Norway, or any other Schengen country, you will need to secure ETIAS approval before you set sail. As of now, this is what we know and what we expect will happen. What is ETIAS and Why Do Cruise Passengers Need It? ETIAS is a digital travel authorisation, which is similar to the US ESTA or UK ETA. It applies to visitors from visa-exempt countries and is designed to enhance border security while maintaining smooth entry into the Schengen Area. If your cruise stops in any Schengen and most EU countries, you must obtain ETIAS approval before arrival. This includes: Cruise passengers disembarking in Schengen ports, even if it is only for a short visit. Travelers flying into a Schengen country before or after their cruise. Tourists, business travelers, and transit passengers planning a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. ETIAS will be valid for three years (or until your passport expires) and allows for multiple entries, but it does not replace a visa. Travelers who require a Schengen visa must still apply for one separately. ETIAS Launch: When Will It Take Effect? The rules of travel to Europe have changed. Starting six months after EES, travelers from 59 visa-exempt countries and territories are required to have a travel authorization to enter most European countries. Late 2026 is the current projected launch date, the introduction of ETIAS has already faced multiple delays. The system was originally planned for 2021, then postponed several times. The latest timeline suggests ETIAS will be implemented after the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational, which is expected in late 2025. Given these delays, further postponements remain a possibility. As of now, we expect ETIAS to launch sometime in 2026, but travelers should monitor official EU sources for the most up-to-date information. You can sign up for updates on the official ETIAS website here: ETIAS ETIAS vs. UK ETA – Do You Need Both for Your Cruise? For cruise passengers sailing the British Isles, it is important to understand the different entry requirements based on where your cruise stops: ETIAS covers Schengen and most EU countries (e.g., France, Spain, Norway, Netherlands). The UK ETA is required for non-visa nationals visiting England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is NOT part of either ETIAS or the UK ETA. What Do You Need for Ireland? The Republic of Ireland has its own immigration rules, separate from both the UK and the Schengen Area: US, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Ireland for tourism. UK ETA does NOT apply to Ireland—it only applies to the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland). ETIAS does NOT apply to Ireland, as Ireland is not in the Schengen Area. If your cruise includes stops in Ireland, the UK, and Schengen countries, you may need: ETIAS (for Schengen stops like France, Spain, or the Netherlands). UK ETA (for UK stops like Scotland, Northern Ireland, or England). No additional authorization for the Republic of Ireland (for visa-exempt travelers). Pay the €20 application fee – (applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt from the fee but will still need to apply). This has recently increased from the original expected cost of €7. (updated July 21, 2025) Receive approval – Most applications are expected to be processed within minutes, though some may take up to 30 days. Cruise Passengers – What You Need to Know Cruise lines will begin to check for ETIAS approval before boarding when it becomes active– much like airlines verify visas. Apply in advance to avoid issues. While most approvals are expected to be instant, some may take longer. ETIAS is not a visa, but failure to obtain one will result in denied boarding or entry refusal. Avoid ETIAS Scams Scams have already begun to show up online. Fraudulent websites may charge excessive fees, collect personal information, or even issue fake approvals that will not be valid for travel. To avoid falling victim: Only apply through the official ETIAS website. It must end in .eu and have the logo shown above. Be cautious of third-party services claiming to expedite approval. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly, so fast-track services are unnecessary. Our approvals took less than one hour. Never pay more than €20 – If a website charges more, it is probably a scam. Check for official EU branding and website domains. UK ETA: Essential Guide for Cruise Travelers

UPDATE FEBRUARY 24, 2026 .Key 2026 Updates: Exemptions: People with valid UK visas or residency, or those traveling from the Common Travel Area (Ireland, Channel Islands). Mandatory Enforcement (Feb 25, 2026): The grace period ends; all eligible visitors must have an approved ETA. Who Needs One: Citizens from 85 countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and all EU nations. Cost & Validity: £16 per application, valid for two years, multiple entries (or until your passport expires). You can check your expiration date on the website if you have already applied. Process: Apply via the “UK ETA” app. Dual Citizens: British/Irish citizens do not need an ETA, but must use a valid British/Irish passport to travel. The UK government has introduced electronic travel authorization (ETA) for visitors who pass through the UK border This includes passengers from the USA, Canada, and Australia. All eligible non-European visitors must apply for an ETA and will need one to travel to the UK from 8 January 2025. You can apply for their ETA through the UK ETA app, which is quick and simple to use and enables most applicants to receive a decision in hours. Visitors can also apply on GOV.UK if they do not have access to a smartphone. What Is the UK ETA? It is a digital travel authorization designed for visitors from visa-exempt countries, including the United States and Canada. It ensures smooth and secure entry to the UK while aligning with similar systems like the USA’s ESTA and Australia’s eVisitor. You do not need to show proof of approval, it is directly linked to your passport. Who Needs an ETA? Travelers from visa-exempt countries must apply for an ETA before arriving in the UK. This includes cruise passengers, children, and anyone entering for tourism, business, or transit. Exceptions include: UK and Irish citizens (including those with dual citizenship using a UK or Irish passport). Travelers with a valid UK visa. you have permission to live, work or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status or right of abode) you are travelling with a British overseas territories citizen passport you live in Ireland and you are travelling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man How to Apply Applying for an ETA is simple: 1. Visit the official UK government website or download the UK ETA app. 2. Provide your passport details, contact information, and biometric data. If using the app, you will scan your face following the directions in the app and scan your passport. 3. You will pay the £16 application fee, directly in the app. Remember…the fee is in £UK, so there will be a currency conversion. Most applications are processed within three working days, but it can take longer, so it wise to apply well in advance of your cruise. We had approval within an hour. Avoid Scams! Only apply via the official government website (Apply for an ETA). Beware of unofficial sites charging inflated fees. Avoid ETA Scams Scams have already begun appearing online. Once either the passport or the ETA expires, you will need to reapply. You can check your expiration date on the same website. Why Has the UK Introduced the ETA? The ETA enhances border security by pre-screening travelers and tracking arrivals. It helps prevent immigration misuse and ensures compliance with UK laws. What Cruise Passengers Need to Know Cruise passengers need to show proof of your ETA when providing passport details during booking or check-in. Cruise lines may require this information well ahead of departure, so plan accordingly. Plan Ahead for a Stress-Free Journey The UK ETA is part of a global shift toward enhanced travel security. While it is an additional step, this will ensure smoother travel experiences. Prepare now and don’t get caught without the necessary documentation. Traveling to Europe? It’s a Port Day – What You Need to Know
Let’s take a look at everything you need….and how to save money. There may be a few things included that you haven’t thought of. This post contains affiliate links which means if you click and buy that I may make a commission, at no cost to you. Please see my disclosure policy for details. First, let’s go over the basics. You will need your sea pass card and a photo ID. There are some who say to take your passport with you, but unless the country you are visiting requires it, LEAVE IT IN THE SAFE! Theft does occur and you DO NOT want your passport stolen. If something happens and you miss the ship, the ship’s security will retrieve your passport from your cabin and leave it with the port authority who will assist you in making further travel arrangements. Money and/or credit cards. Many countries are becoming cashless societies, especially in Europe. Credit cards such as Mastercard and Visa are widely accepted.. American Express is harder to use outside the USA. If you really feel the need to have some cash with you, use an ATM onshore to obtain a small amount. Be sure to let your bank or card issuer know you will be traveling and where. It is smart to carry all ID and credit cards in an RFID protected case. This will prevent scanners from stealing your information. Or, use an RFID blocking card in your wallet. Disembarking the ship The ship will either be docked at a pier or there will be a tender service from the ship. Tendering is very easy. If you have book an excursion through the ship, you will be given tender tickets indicating time and location to meet. You will then be escorted to the tender. If you are going ashore on your own, meet in the designated area (this will be noted on the daily planner or on an information sheet left in your cabin). Some cabin types and cruise line loyalty levels will have different meeting locales. You will be issued a tender ticket at that point. Wait until your number is called and then proceed to the tender. If you have arranged a private excursion early in the day, be sure to arrive to your designated area early….tender lines can be long. If you are not in a rush to get off the ship, the tendering process will become quicker later in the day, as fewer people will be trying to leave the ship. Be sure to not take any fresh food (fruit, sandwiches, etc) with you off the ship. Bottled water, drinks and prepackaged snacks are fine. When exiting the ship, take note of the required return time. This is usually 30 minutes prior to sail away. Lines to return to the ship may be long, but you will not be left behind if you arrive to the departure area prior to the last scheduled tender back to the ship. If the ship is docked at the pier, join the cue to depart the ship. Again…make note of the required return time. The ship WILL LEAVE without you! What Type of Bag is Best? As you prepare for your cruise and are starting to pack, it’s a good idea to think about your shore excursion bag. What you put in it will depend on the type of activity you’re planning to do while in port. If you’re going to the beach or a boating excursion, you will want a few different things than if you’re zip-lining through the jungle, sightseeing or shopping. Packing a Beach Excursion Bag If you are heading to the beach, you want to make sure to bring everything you will need to enjoy the day. You don’t want to be on the beach or on a snorkeling excursion and realize you forgot the sunscreen! Of course, you can borrow (hopefully) from a stranger, but best to be prepared with your essentials. I recently found this great beach bag. The main compartment is spacious enough to fit swimsuits, a change of clothes, beach toys and other essentials. The long zipper closure helps to prevent items from falling out and there are holders on the outside for beach towels. You can also unzip the bottom to remove any sand that gets inside! And there are more pockets than I know what to do with. These are the essential items to pack in your beach bag: beach towels…..the ship will provide beach towels to use while onshore. A good beach blanket water-proof and reef safe sunscreen lip balm water or reusable water bottles bathing suit cover up wide brimmed sun hat or baseball cap sunglasses towels bands water shoes (many beaches are rocky or are covered in shells) sand removal tool Daily planner from your cruise ship (with all aboard time!) or take a photo *Remember, many beaches around the world are asking snorkelers and swimmers to use reef safe sunscreen Optional items for your beach bag: book or other reading material snorkeling mask snorkeling fins anti-theft vault (popular with cruisers and beach goers) children’s sand toys if you have kids or just like playing in the sand Going swimming and want to keep your ID, phone and money safe? A waterproof holder is an excellent choice. Bring a Backpack for Active Shore Excursions If you’re going to be active on your port day, bring a bag that keeps your hand free. Avoid Trouble: Items Banned on Cruise Ships
Preparing for your cruise is exciting and a little overwhelming. You don’t want to forget anything….but you also don’t want to bring something that is not allowed onboard! Cruising is a different kind of vacation from hotel and land tours. Ships have very set rules on what you can and cannot bring onboard. You might be surprised to find out some of the items that are actually prohibited on cruise ships! While some things are obvious, others may seem a bit weird or strange….you can even get you in trouble if you bring them. There are also some practical travel items that you might normally bring on a vacation, but aren’t allowed onboard cruise ships. Items that Are Prohibited on a Cruise The following are examples of items that guests are not allowed to bring onboard. These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found. Weapons, illegal drugs & other Substances (including marijuana, cannabis, extracts of THC and/or CBD), These items could interfere with the safe operation of the ship or the safe and secure environment of our guests and crew and are strictly prohibited. Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, flammable liquids, explosives, and dangerous chemicals will NOT be returned. Firearms & Ammunition, including realistic replicas. Sharp Objects, including knives and scissors. (Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than 4 inches are allowed.) In Alaska, ulu knives bought in port may be brought onboard but must remain stored in cabins. Aerial Drones: Some cruise lines allow guests to bring drones on their cruise for use on land only and outside of the port area. Drones are not to be operated onboard the ship at any time. Different countries may have different rules. Guests assume full responsibility for understanding all local authority rules related to drone usage and for obtaining ay required permissions for drone operations. Any liability, including environmental damage from drone usage is the guest’s responsibility. The cruise line assumes no liability for guests drones that may be confiscated by local authorities for violating local laws or for any accident or injury resulting from a guest drone flight. While onboard, drones must be stored safely in the stateroom. Drones used on the ship will be confiscated till the end of the cruise. A Guest Conduct Policy warning will be issued and guests may be subject to disembarkation at their own expense for onboard drone usage. Candles, Incense, Coffee Makers, Clothes Irons, Steamers & Hot Plates: Items that generate heat, steam or produce an open flame are strictly prohibited. This includes heating pads, clothing irons, hotplates, candles, incense and any other item that may create a fire hazard. NOTE: The only exception to this policy are curling irons, hair straighteners and personal fans that are “”certified”” low wattage. Matches and normal lighteners are allowed onboard. However “”torch lighters”” and novelty lighters that look like guns are not allowed onboard. Torch lighters emit a powerful concentrated flame, and therefore are prohibited. If you are someone who loves a specific type of coffee, you can request a hot water kettle from your cabin steward and make pour-over coffee in your cabin. Or your favorite tea. Clothing Irons and Steamers These are a potential fire hazard, they’re prohibited to be brought on a cruise ship. Fire is one of the worst things that could happen on a cruise ship; therefore, this is strictly enforced. f you are a first time cruiser, you might be surprised that unlike a hotel room, you won’t have an iron in your cabin. If you do need to get wrinkles out of your clothes, some cruise ships have public laundry rooms that cruise passengers can use. You can also use the ship’s laundry and pressing service at an additional fee. Which cruise lines offer self-service laundry? It is easy to remove wrinkles in your cabin and to wash out smaller items. Click on picture for link to products. Smart Glasses They may be brought onboard but are restricted in areas including casinos, spa service areas, restrooms, locker rooms, medical facilities, security screening locations, youth facilities, back-of-house tours, crew areas or any place with a reasonable expectation of privacy. Violations result in confiscation. Vapes While allowed onboard in specified areas, vapes and e-cigarettes are banned ashore in Mexico, with public smoking of regular cigarettes prohibited in many areas, risking fines or jail. Baseball Bats, Hockey Sticks, Cricket Bats, Bows & Arrows Skateboards & Surfboards Martial Arts Gear If sailing in the Caribbean, do not pack any clothing with camouflage material. There are a few islands, such as Barbados, that prohibit this type of clothing, as it is worn by the military only. Self-Defense Gear, including handcuffs, pepper spray, night sticks. Flammable Liquids and Explosives, including lighter fluid and fireworks. HAM Radios Hookahs & Water Hookah Pipes. Surge protected Electrical Extension Cords Dangerous Chemicals, including bleach and paint. Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Beverages: Check with your cruise line to see if wine is allowed to be brought onboard at embarkation and how much…many do. Alcoholic beverages that are purchased in ports-of-call or from shops onboard will be stored by the ship and delivered to you on the last day of the sailing. Alcoholic beverages seized on embarkation day will not be returned. Perishable food that requires refrigeration…this includes fruit, vegetables, dairy products or take away containers. If you need refrigeration for medical reasons, contact the cruise line at least 30 days prior to sailing to make arrangements. Food that is prepackaged such as snacks, chips, candy, powdered coffee creamer, etc are allowed onboard. Seasoned travelers have developed strategies and adopted habits after years of travel to make their journeys easier. Planning & Packing Make a calendar of your travel days. I find this very useful when planning any trip. Make sure to note the dates and times of each reservation. I also include prices and locations of hotels, ports, car rentals and/or train schedules. After the trip is over, I keep this calendar in a file with receipts and tourist information I gathered during our vacation. I can’t tell you how many times I have referred back to my files when planning future trips….or just to remember what we did! Make a checklist. This will make packing soooo much easier. Don’t forget items like sunglasses, passports, sunscreen, any medications you may need, or special items you want to take. Start brain storming as early as possible prior to departing…think about the activities you are planning, possible weather and what types of clothing you will need. Check off the items as you pack them. Nothing is more frustrating than arriving at your destination and realizing you have forgotten something! Tip: A good packing list is essential: Caribbean, Norway, British Isles, Alaska and Cruise Packing 101 Take a photo of your passport and email it to yourself. Even if something happens to your phone, you will be able to access your email on a public computer. Use a travel wallet/passport holder. I have found this to be one of the most useful items in my carryon. I keep boarding passes, passports, money, pen and my credit cards here. Travel wallet Contact your financial institutions and inform them you are traveling. If you are planning to use your ATM and/or credit cards, your bank needs to know you will be making purchases outside your home area. If you don’t, they may put a “hold” on your account and you will not be able to access your funds until you contact them. If you are traveling out of the country, this can be difficult and expensive….not to mention frustrating. Use credit cards for purchases. Many countries are becoming cashless societies since Covid. Even small purchases like an ice cream in the park can only be done with a credit card….we experienced this in London’s Hyde Park. When using a credit card, always let your bank handle the conversion by purchasing in the local currency. If you feel the need for actual cash, use your debit card at a local ATM. You can withdraw smaller amounts and get a better exchange rate. Protect your credit cards and passport from thieves. Simply place your credit/debit cards or any other RFID-enabled contactless Smart Cards near a RFID Blocking Card and you’re safe and ready to go. Use packing cubes. We started using these a few years ago and boy….we are so much more organized. If staying in one place for several days, it is easy to unpack…just place the packing cube in a drawer! Get travel insurance. Travel is expensive. Protect your investment with a good travel plan. Make sure it covers medical, loss of use, hospital stays and travel home if your trip is cut short. Flying Carry on luggage. Having a good carry on bag with plenty of storage is a game changer. I like to use one that fits into the overhead bin and also a tote bag that fits over the handle. That way, I can keep items I want/need during the flight under the seat in front of me. Tag your bags. There are many fun, easily recognizable luggage tags available. When it’s time to purchase new luggage, find suitcases that are not just black or blue….find some that are a little different….maybe a bright color or a fun pattern. Even then….attach something to your luggage that helps you locate them easily. Use Air Tags. We always put an AirTag in our carry on and in our checked bags. If something happens and it gets lost or stolen, you can quickly locate it and retrieve if possible (if stolen, get police assistant to retrieve). Luggage gets delayed or put on the wrong plane all the time. These will assist in tracking your bags. I use a fun, colorful AirTag holder and attach them to the inside of my bags. Bring Air Pods . Air travel is noisy. If you are trying to watch a movie, read or sleep, Air Pods are invaluable. It will also help to discourage a talkative neighbor! Get access to an airport lounge. If you have a long layover, this is a quiet place to wait and they offer complimentary food, beverages, magazines, newspapers and Wi-Fi. Some even have showers or rooms where you can catch a few ZZZs. Check out https://thepointsguy.com for excellent information on credit cards that offer lounge access. And remember, if you are flying first or business class overseas, you automatically get free access! Another option is to join Priority Pass. With over 1,700+ airport lounges and experiences, it will help make your airport time more enjoyable. Use locks for your luggage! We always lock ours when flying or boarding a ship. These luggage locks are designed to keep thieves out but still allow TSA or other airport security to check bags. And because the TSA can’t take their key out without relocking, you can be assured your luggage will stay locked . Weigh your luggage! Overweight luggage can be very expensive. Make sure your bags are under the weight limit of your airline. This luggage scale is easy to use. Just hook your suitcase for instant weight. Cruising Don’t overpack. Make your packing checklist….and then cut it in half! Well….maybe not in half, but don’t take ALL of it. 🙂 I have found that I NEVER wear all the clothes I take. Cruise Packing 101 – what not to forget!
You’ve booked your cruise, hotels, plane reservations….now what? First step is probably think about what to pack! A good packing list essential. Cruising is a travel experience where you want to be prepared with everything you need in advance. I’ve learned it’s easier to bring it from home than trying to find it in port. I have found these cruise accessories and travel gadgets to be really useful for space-saving and more! Below, I share some of the most useful things to bring on a cruise….from items that help with packing for a cruise to genius items that will organize your cruise cabin space. I will also include a few items you may not have thought of bringing, but really should be on in your suitcase! There’s a possibility you already have some of these things at home. You might be wondering if you need all the items on this list. You can pick and choose what you think you will need and use. Just remember, the items below are some of the most popular and well reviewed cruise essentials sold on Amazon. Many of these items are things that I bring and use on my own cruises. PASSPORT! and other important travel documents Keep these items in your carryon…you will need them to check in at the pier. I find a travel wallet to be very useful. Suitcase with spinner wheels I have a weakness for new luggage, lol. Make sure it’s lightweight and has 4 spinner wheels. This makes it so that it’s easy to board your cruise ship and disembark….especially if you do self-disembarkation. Plus….who wants to drag a heavy bag around ship terminals or airports! My favorite brands currently are London Fog and TravelPro. Pro tip – If you have a neutral or common color suitcase, like black, blue or grey, make sure to add something colorful and unique so that it stands out and you can find it easily at the airport or cruise terminal. Carry on luggage I have been using an airline approved size carry on bag for several year now. There is plenty of room for extra shoes, a change of clothes, medicine, jewelry, electronics….all the things I don’t want to check with baggage handlers AND this one fits under the seat! If you need more storage, I love this tote bag from Lo & Sons. There is a zipper section on the bottom for shoes or items that might leak. Trying to minimize the amount of luggage you are taking? This convertible garment bag holds a TON of items and protects your nicer clothes from wrinkles. Comes in other colors and patters also. Cruise Line Luggage Tag Holders Protect your luggage with reusable holders. Nothing worse than having your luggage go missing! Plastic reusable luggage tags holders are so practical. If you get nothing else, buy luggage tag holders! Not only are they reasonably priced, but they can be reused again and again. After having tags accidentally torn off one time and our bags go missing, I purchased some. I will never cruise without them again! Below are Amazon links for several cruise lines. I’ve found even more ways to use packing cubes to keep organized on my cruise. My suitcase stays organized and when I unpack onboard, I just move them into the drawers or shelves. I recommend getting at least 2 packs in various sizes and in different colors. This way you can have cubes for each member of the family. I’ve recently started using compression packing cubes. Our last trip, my bag only weighed 38 pounds but was packed full because the clothing was bulky. These cubes decrease the bulk and give you more room. Luggage Locks Lock your luggage! We always lock ours when flying or boarding a ship. These luggage locks are designed to keep thieves out but still allow TSA to check bags when they’re going through security. And because the TSA can’t take their key out without relocking, you can be assured your luggage will stay locked . Lanyard and Keycard Holder Cruise lanyards are one of the most popular cruise essentials. If you want to stay hands free or keep organized, putting your cruise key card in a plastic water-proof lanyard is super practical both on the cruise and as you get off the ship at a cruise port. Pop Socket Card Wallet No need to carry a bag onboard! This pop socket wallet is a sleek and secure way to carry your seapass card along with your phone. Magnetically attaches to your phone. It has an attached phone grip, so you can avoid phone drops and kickstand your phone. Holds up to 3 cards and is RFID protected. Travel Binoculars Most cruise ships provide binoculars in your cabin but they aren’t very good. We like to bring a small, travel size pair.
