Be sure to switch your phone to airplane mode as soon as the ship sets sail. I usually do it as soon as I board. Using cellular service at sea can become extremely expensive, and no one wants to come home to a shocking phone bill. If you’ve purchased a Wi-Fi package, simply turn on airplane mode and then enable Wi-Fi to connect to the ship’s network. Instructions for connecting are usually provided in your cabin, or you can always ask a crew member for help.
If you plan to make phone calls or use the internet while in port, check with your mobile carrier before your cruise to see what international coverage is included and what additional charges may apply in the countries you’ll be visiting. Many ports, restaurants, and cafés offer free Wi-Fi, making it easy to check messages or post vacation photos without using cellular data. A good tip? Follow the crew members — they usually know exactly where to find the best free Wi-Fi spots in port!
With Basic Wi-Fi, you’ll be able to browse the web, send emails, and stay in touch with family and friends through select messaging apps. It’s a budget-friendly option for keeping connected while on vacation. However, activities like sending large attachments, posting photos or videos to social media, streaming movies or music, and making video calls typically require a Premium Wi-Fi package.
