But Port Canaveral is more than just a place to board your cruise ship.

The surrounding Space Coast offers plenty to see and do, from beautiful beaches and waterfront restaurants to fishing charters and, if you time your visit right, the chance to watch a rocket launch. And, of course, the legendary Kennedy Space Center is just a short drive away.

Why Arrive Early for a Port Canaveral Cruise?

I always recommend arriving at least a day before your cruise whenever possible. And Port Canaveral gives you a great excuse to arrive even earlier.

Spend a couple of days exploring Florida's Space Coast, with its beautiful beaches, laid-back coastal towns, restaurants, and plenty of hotels to choose from.

You can also make a trip to Orlando part of your cruise vacation. Spend a few days enjoying Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, or SeaWorld Orlando before heading to Port Canaveral.

Whether you want beaches, theme parks, space exploration, or simply a little extra vacation time, there are plenty of reasons to turn your cruise departure into part of the trip.

Getting to Port Canaveral

f you’re flying to Port Canaveral for your cruise, you’ll most likely arrive at Orlando International Airport (MCO) or Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB).

Orlando International Airport is the closest major airport to Port Canaveral and is approximately 45 miles away. Depending on traffic, the drive from MCO to Port Canaveral generally takes about 45 minutes to an hour.Orlando

Sanford International Airport is another option, although it is farther from the port.

Both airports have plenty of rental car options, and you’ll find numerous hotels in the Orlando and Port Canaveral areas if you decide to arrive a day or two before your cruise.

From Orlando International Airport, the drive to Port Canaveral is relatively easy. The route generally takes you east toward the Space Coast, with toll roads available depending on your chosen route.

One important tip: Give yourself plenty of extra time on cruise day. Florida traffic can be unpredictable, and you'll want to arrive at the port with time to spare rather than watching the clock while sitting in traffic.

And honestly, if you’re flying into Orlando anyway, why not arrive a day or two early? A pre-cruise stay gives you a chance to relax, explore the Space Coast or Orlando, and start your vacation before you ever step onboard your ship.

Driving to Port Canaveral

Driving to Port Canaveral is pretty straightforward. Interstate 95 (I-95) runs north and south along Florida’s east coast. As you get closer to the port, watch for signs directing you toward A1A, Cocoa Beach, and Port Canaveral.

Once you arrive in the Port Canaveral area, follow the signs for your cruise line and ship. The port will have signage directing you to the appropriate terminal for ships departing that day.

Port Canaveral Driving Times & Distances

How long it takes to reach the port will depend on traffic, but here are approximate distances and drive times from some popular locations in the area:

Keep in mind that Florida traffic can change these times considerably, especially during morning and afternoon rush hours or during busy travel periods. Give yourself plenty of extra time on embarkation day.

Using Toll Roads Between Orlando and Port Canaveral

There is a thriving transportation industry built around Port Canaveral cruise passengers, so you’ll find plenty of options for getting between Orlando International Airport, Orlando-area hotels, and the cruise terminals.

While shuttle transportation can seem expensive at first, remember that you won't have to pay for parking at the port if you take a shuttle.

If you're looking for an affordable option, an independent cruise shuttle is often worth considering. There are numerous companies that specialize in transportation between Orlando and Port Canaveral, and rates can be lower than taking a taxi or rideshare.'

Prices and service levels vary by company, and rates can change depending on the season, number of passengers, and whether you choose shared or private transportation. Some companies also offer discounts and specials, so it's worth comparing a few options before booking.

Shared Shuttle Service

Most of the less-expensive options are shared shuttle services. That means you'll be traveling with other cruise passengers, and the shuttle may operate on a set schedule.

Typically, you'll have several departure times available from the airport or your hotel. The shuttle will then make its way to Port Canaveral with other passengers heading to their cruise ships.

Hotel Shuttles

Orlando and Port Canaveral are major tourist destinations, so there are plenty of hotels competing for the business of cruise passengers. Many hotels take advantage of this by offering shuttle services to and from Orlando International Airport and Port Canaveral.

This can be a great option if you're flying into Orlando the day before your cruise.

For example, some hotels offer packages that include airport pickup, an overnight stay, and transportation to Port Canaveral the following morning. It can be an easy and convenient way to take some of the stress out of getting to your cruise.

And honestly, I’m a big fan of arriving the day before a cruise whenever possible. A delayed flight is stressful enough without worrying about missing your ship.Hotel shuttle packages can also be a good value, but be sure to compare the total package price with booking your hotel and transportation separately. Some hotels charge an additional fee for cruise transportation, while others include it as part of a package.

If you're flying in on the same day as your cruise, however, a hotel shuttle probably won't be useful. And if you're not planning to stay overnight, there's certainly no reason to book a hotel just to take advantage of its shuttle service.

Tip: When booking a pre-cruise hotel, always ask exactly what transportation is included, where the shuttle picks up, what time it leaves for the port, and whether there is an additional fee. Those details can vary considerably from one hotel to another.

Uber & Lyft

Uber and Lyft are another option for getting to and from Port Canaveral, but they aren't always the most economical choice—especially if you're traveling with a family or larger group.

Both rideshare services operate between Orlando International Airport (MCO), Orlando-area hotels, and Port Canaveral. The biggest drawback is the price. Fares can fluctuate based on demand, time of day, traffic, and the type of vehicle you request.

Expect to pay $100 or more per vehicle, each way, depending on current rates. Remember, that's the price per car, not per person, so rideshare can make more sense if you're traveling with several people.

The other thing to consider is availability. While rideshare service is available, drivers may be less willing to make the longer trip between Orlando and Port Canaveral, particularly when demand is high. Your fare may also be significantly higher during busy travel periods.

My advice: Check the Uber or Lyft fare before you book. Then compare it with the cost of a cruise shuttle or private car service. If you're traveling with two or three other people, the convenience of a rideshare may make the higher price worthwhile. If you're traveling alone or as a couple, a shared shuttle may be the better value.

Taxis

A taxi from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Port Canaveral can be one of the more expensive transportation options, with fares often exceeding $150 one way.

The advantage is that the fare is generally per vehicle rather than per person, so a taxi can make more sense if you're traveling with a family or larger group. For one or two passengers, however, a shared shuttle may be a better value.

One benefit of taking a taxi is convenience. Taxis are readily available at MCO, so you don't have to make a reservation and can typically get a ride as soon as you arrive.

Don't forget to plan for your return transportation, too. If you're taking a taxi from the port back to Orlando International Airport after your cruise, you'll need to pay for that trip separately.

Tip: Before choosing a taxi, compare the estimated fare with a private car service and rideshare. Depending on the size of your group and current pricing, one option may be considerably less expensive than another.

Car Rentals: A Good Option for Exploring

If you're flying into Orlando for a cruise, you may want to do more than simply get to the port. With Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach, and the rest of the Space Coast nearby, having a car can make exploring the area much easier.

A rental car can also be surprisingly cost-effective if you're planning to spend a few days sightseeing before or after your cruise. Depending on your travel dates, renting a car for a day or two can sometimes cost less than paying for multiple rideshares or shuttle trips.

There is one important thing to consider, though: parking.

If you plan to keep the rental car while you're on your cruise, you'll need to pay for parking at Port Canaveral for the duration of your cruise. At that point, the convenience of having a car may not be worth the additional expense.

One-Way Car Rentals

Another option is to rent a car in Orlando and return it near Port Canaveral. Several major rental car companies have locations in both the Orlando area and near the port, making a one-way rental possible.

This can be a great option if you want to explore Orlando or the Space Coast before your cruise without having to worry about returning the car to the airport.

Cruise Line Shuttles

Of course, your cruise line will be happy to arrange transportation between the airport and the ship. Cruise-line transfers are probably one of the easiest options, but they can also be one of the more expensive.

These transfers typically operate on your scheduled cruise day and provide transportation between your arrival airport and the cruise terminal. On the way home, you can arrange a transfer from the port to the airport after your cruise.

The biggest advantage is convenience. You book the transfer through your cruise line, arrive at the airport, follow the instructions provided, and let them handle the transportation to the ship. For first-time cruisers, that simplicity can be worth paying a little more.

You can generally purchase airport transfers when making your cruise arrangements or through your cruise line before sailing. Don't wait until the last minute to arrange transportation. Check with your cruise line for the current booking deadline and instructions, as policies can vary.

When Cruise Line Transfers Don't Make Sense

If you're planning to arrive a few days early, stay in Orlando, spend time at Disney or Universal, or explore the Space Coast before your cruise, a cruise-line transfer probably isn't your best option.

These transfers are designed to get you from the airport to the ship on your sailing day—not to serve as your personal transportation while you're sightseeing.

If you're staying in the area before your cruise, you'll likely have more flexibility and potentially save money by using a hotel shuttle, shared shuttle, rental car, rideshare, or private transportation.

Tip: Compare the cruise line's transfer price with independent shuttle and transportation services before booking. The cruise-line option may be the easiest, but it isn't necessarily the best value. 

Parking at Port Canaveral

If you're driving to Port Canaveral, you have several parking options. The easiest is official Port Canaveral cruise parking, which is located directly adjacent to the cruise terminals.

The port does not own or operate off-site cruise parking facilities. At the official lots and garages, you can park at the terminal assigned to your cruise and walk directly to your ship. Oversized parking for RVs is also available at the cruise terminals.

Official Port Canaveral Parking

The current official parking rate is $20 per day, plus tax, for vehicles and RVs. Parking is charged for both your arrival and departure days.

Cash is not accepted.One important thing to know: the terminal parking garages and surface lots do not open before 10:00 a.m. for embarking passengers.

Plan your arrival according to the boarding time assigned by your cruise line rather than arriving at the port hours early and expecting to park.

Construction around the cruise terminals can also cause traffic delays from time to time, so give yourself plenty of time on embarkation day.

Off-Site Cruise Parking

If you're looking to save money, there are also private parking facilities near Port Canaveral. These can be a good option for longer cruises because their daily rates are often lower than official port parking.

Most off-site facilities provide complimentary shuttle service between the parking lot and your cruise terminal, so you don't have to worry about finding your way to the ship.

What About Hotel Parking?

Unfortunately, vehicles left in unattended hotel parking lots can be targets for theft. For added peace of mind, consider using a secure, dedicated cruise parking facility or the official Port Canaveral parking areas.

If you're flying into Orlando for your cruise, staying at a hotel the night before can make embarkation day much less stressful. And fortunately, there are plenty of hotels in the Orlando and Port Canaveral area that cater specifically to cruise passengers.

Port Canaveral Hotels with Airport & Cruise Port Shuttles

Some hotels offer shuttle service between Orlando International Airport (MCO), the hotel, and Port Canaveral. These can be especially convenient if you're arriving the day before your cruise and don't want to rent a car.

Depending on the hotel, you may be able to book a package that includes your hotel stay, airport transportation, and transportation to the cruise terminal the following day.

But don't automatically assume the package is the best deal. Compare the cost of the hotel with the shuttle package against booking the room and transportation separately. Sometimes you'll save money by arranging your own transportation.

Located right in the heart of Cocoa Beach, the Four Points is within walking distance to parks, restaurants, the beach, and the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop.

Port Canaveral Hotels with Orlando Airport AND Cruise Port Shuttles

While only a few hotels offer packages with shuttles from the Orlando airport to Port Canaveral, there many more that offer shuttles to the cruise terminal. Uber/Lyft are also available and cost about $10-15 (for up to four people) to get to the port.

Note: If you don’t plan to park a car during your cruise, don’t book a parking package just for shuttle access. It’s much more expensive. Simply pay for the shuttle separate or book an Uber/Lyft.

This hotel offers a great location between the main road through Cocoa Beach and the beach itself. You will be an easy 10 minutes from the port and a short distance away from restaurants and things to do.

Are shuttle rides round trip between the hotel and the cruise port?While a number of hotels do offer round trip service, many offer only one-way trips. Any package you book will clearly tell you if the ride is roundtrip. If not, you’ll need to arrange alternate transportation when returning.

If I need to shuttle to the airport, what’s the earliest I should book a flight from Orlando?
Many people fly in for their cruise from Port Canaveral and then fly out the day the cruise arrives back in port. Be sure to allow plenty of time….I suggest giving yourself plenty of time to debark the ship, collect luggage and board your shuttle or other transportation. The trip will take about an hour.

Be sure to arrive at least two hours before your flight, as Orlando International is a very busy airport. The earliest I suggest is a flight after 12:00 pm. If earlier flights are better for your destination, plan to spend the night at an airport hotel and fly out the following morning. No need to add stress to the end of a wonderful cruise vacation!
